The Summer School Program combines an intensive Spanish language course with courses in Spanish culture and tours and visits in Madrid and to nearby historical cities.
There are two program options for students:
For students with a beginning to intermediate level of Spanish, there is an Intensive Spanish language course. Students in this course will also participate in a Cultural Introduction to Spain course.
In the Cultural Introduction to Spain, students will learn about the diversity and cultural unity of the Spanish people. By visiting churches, synagogues, museums, palaces, and other places, students will gain a broad perspective on the history of Spain, and its present day complexities. This course is taught in English.
Students with an advanced level of Spanish will participate in an Intensive language course and a Spanish Culture and Civilization course, taught entirely in Spanish. In order to enjoy the many organized cultural visits, advanced students may also take part in the Cultural Introdution to Spain Course.
In the Spanish Culture and Civilization Course students will deepen their knowledge of the history and development of Spain through the ages, so that students have the tools to understand Spain’s complex present day situation. The course focuses on Spain’s fusion of three cultures, Christian, Jewish, and Moorish, and how that has influenced Spain through the centuries.
Both options include 29 hours of cultural visits and events, such as museum visits and bus & walking tours of Madrid. Also included are a bull fight and a Flamenco dance show. You will also have the opportunity to visit the nearby historical towns of Toledo, Segovia and El Escorial.
